SENATOR SMITH: And you know nothing of it?
MR. MARCONI: I know nothing of it, except some statements or rumors I have heard of it in the press.
SENATOR SMITH: Do you know the naval vessel Florida?
MR. MARCONI: Yes; I have heard of her.
SENATOR SMITH: Is she equipped with wireless apparatus?
MR. MARCONI: Yes, sir; I think so. I think they all are.
SENATOR SMITH: I am going to read to you the following, and ask whether you know anything about any fact or circumstance connected with it.
This is from the commanding officer of the Florida to the Secretary of the Navy, dated April 22, and reads as follows:

On the evening of the steamship Carpathia's arrival in New York, the four following radiograms were intercepted by the chief operator, J. R. Simpson, chief electrician, United States Navy. They appear to me to be significant enough to be brought to the attention of the department:

"SEAGATE TO CARPATHIA-8:12 P.M.
"Say, old man, Marconi Co. taking good care of you. Keep your mouth shut, and hold your story. It is fixed for you so you will get big money. Now, please do your best to clear."

That was 8:12 P.M. Then follows this one:

8:30 P.M.
To Marconi officer, Carpathia and Titanic:
Arranged for your exclusive story for dollars in four figures, Mr. Marconi agreeing. Say nothing until you see me. Where are you now?

M. MARCONI : Je n’en sais rien, sauf certaines déclarations ou rumeurs dont j’ai entendu parler dans la presse.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Connaissez-vous le navire Florida?
M. MARCONI : Oui, j’en ai entendu parler.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Est-il équipé d’appareils sans fil?
M. MARCONI : Oui, monsieur; je pense que oui. Je pense qu’ils le sont tous.
LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Je vais vous lire ce qui suit et vous demander si vous êtes au courant d’un fait ou d’une circonstance qui s’y rattache.
Voici ce qu’a dit le commandant du Florida au secrétaire de la Marine, en date du 22 avril :

Le soir de l’arrivée du navire à vapeur Carpathia à New York, les quatre radiogrammes suivants ont été interceptés par l’opérateur en chef, J. R. Simpson, électricien en chef de la marine américaine. Elles me semblent suffisamment importantes pour être portées à l’attention du ministère :

"SEAGATE TO CARPATHIA-8:12 P.M.
- Dites, mon vieux, Marconi Co. qui prend bien soin de vous. Taisez-vous, et retenez votre histoire. Elle est gardée pour vous, pour que vous ayez beaucoup d’argent. Maintenant, Faites de votre mieux pour éclaircir. »

C’était à 20 h 12. Ensuite, il y a ceci :
